OpenEverest is an open-source, cloud-native platform designed to simplify running, managing, and scaling diverse data workloads on Kubernetes. The project achieved CNCF Sandbox status in March 2026, marking a major milestone in its evolution from a single-vendor initiative. While initially limited to PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB, OpenEverest is currently undergoing an architectural refactoring toward a modular, provider-based design to support broader technology integration.
This transition to an extensible plugin architecture serves as the primary enabler for the community to expand OpenEverest's capabilities independently of the founding vendor's roadmap. This session examines the ongoing technical refactoring alongside the key milestones that established vendor neutrality and secured CNCF Sandbox status. Participants will gain a practical blueprint for transforming single-vendor projects into inclusive, community-driven cloud-native platforms.
Chi has spent the last decade developing software for startups focused on data platforms. She played a pivotal role in developing FerretDB, an open-source alternative to MongoDB built atop PostgreSQL. She currently works on the OpenEverest project, where she focuses on automating database provisioning and management on Kubernetes. She is an active contributor to the open-source community, collaborating with peers on GitHub under the handle @chilagrow.
