DESCRIPTION:This talk provides an overall introduction to virtualization te
chnology. The speaker begins with the basic concepts and a brief history o
f virtualization\, introducing virtual machines and hypervisors. We then i
ntroduce memory virtualization and address translation\, including virtual
memory\, paging\, and the roles of the MMU and TLB.\n\nNext\, we show how
virtual machine executes guest system's instructions through direct execu
tion\, enabled by hardware-assisted virtualization such as KVM and Virtual
ization.framework. We contrast this with emulation approaches\, including
interpretation and JIT compilation.\n\nFinally\, we discuss I/O virtualiza
tion\, focusing on VirtIO. We show how emulators and hypervisors such as Q
EMU and ARCN efficiently virtualize devices\, including disks\, input devi
 ces\, and graphics\, through VirtIO.\n\nBy the end of this session\, the a
udience will have a clear mental model of how modern VMs and containers wo
 rk under the hood.
